Ten Good Books to Grow by PDF Print E-mail

As we come up to Easter and the chance of a break from work what about taking some time to do some reading. I have read some good books so far this year which have got me thinking and reflecting about church, leadership and going deeper with Christ. Some of these books are especially of interest for those engaged in church leadership but they are still of value for those generally who love the church and who love Jesus.

Some of the books that I have read recently which I have found helpful:

Worship MattersWorship Matters by Bob Kauflin (Crossway). One of the best books I have read on the theology  and practice of leading worship. Especially helpful for aspiring worship leaders.

Humility: True Greatness by CJ Mahaney  (Multnomah.) A short book but deep and enriching from an American pastor who has thought a lot about this great Christian virtue.

The Reason for God by Timothy Keller (Hodder) A good book for those who need to marshall good arguments for the sceptics and atheist we meet today. Requires a bit of thinking through but very rewarding. Not the most in depth book on apologetics but a good place to start.

The Deliberate Church by Mark Dever (Crossway) Written by an American pastor but many of the principles apply to all churches and are worth thinking through  - encourages us to be more intentional about what we do and why.

Hidden in Plain SightHidden in Plain Sight by Mark Buchanan (Nelson) Buchanan is a sparkling writer and anything by him is worth reading and re-reading. This is a devotional book based on 2 Peter ch1.

Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World (Crossway) Ed by CJ Mahaney.  I found this book helpful in the iConnect series recently preached in High Kirk. A small book but with an important and challenging message to those of us too influenced by our materialistic culture.

Vintage Church by Mark Driscoll (Crossway) Some find Mark Driscoll too radical and in your face – I love what he writes and find it fresh and challenging. He has some radical ideas on church today which you will find here, but much of what he says is spot on and he makes Jesus’ church vibrant  and relevant to today.

Above All Earthly PowersAbove all Earthly Powers by  David Wells  (IVP)  A book which looks at how we can better stand for Christ in a post modern world. Good critique of our culture and the consumerism found in churches today.

Finally Alive (Christian Focus) by John Piper. A book looking at the term born again and what exactly it means. Good solid biblical food on Christian conversion and what it looks like.
