2 Corinthians

Real church can be messy; real church can be hurtful; real church can be disappointing. But real church can also be helpful; real church can be comforting; real church can be joyful; real church can be forgiving. Life is hard so we need each other. And we need to be real.

Time to Reflect

Introduction to 2 Corinthians

Here is a little background to 2 Corinthians and why Paul wrote this letter? It is actually we think the fourth letter he wrote to Corinth. We only have two of his letters in our New Testament. The first letter he wrote is mentioned in 1 Cor.5:9 but it has gone missing; his second letter was what we have as 1 Corinthians; the third letter is mentioned in 2 Cor. 2:3-4 and is again lost to us and then his fourth letter is what we have here as 2 Corinthians. So there has been a fair bit of letter writing between Paul and Corinth.

2 Corinthians is written about a year after 1 Corinthians (in AD 55/56). The church has been infiltrated by some people who have challenged Paul’s authority as an Apostle. In what was probably Paul’s most personal letter he seeks to defend himself, answer his opponents and stabilise the situation in the church in Corinth.

The letter deals with many practical issues we encounter in church life.
