One-to-One
The words or terms that spring immediately to mind are; encouragement, reality,
objectivity, friendship. Also; mutual benefit.
There is an ease with one-to-one, due to the arrangement between the two people meeting,
fortnightly, monthly or whatever, as they see the need.
Encouragement; in that the non-judgement aspect of two people sharing through being
honest and real, so giving the opportunity to stand back and be objective about
circumstances and situations.
Mutual benefit: There is always the danger of this being seen as one person guiding
someone who is in trouble or having difficulties. But that’s not the outworking of one-to-
one. There is mutual benefit for the relationship; it is a ‘two-way giving’ where there is a
building up on both sides. This comes through the Word; Hebrews 4; 12 “For the word
of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates
even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and
attitudes of the heart.â€
The sharing of the Word is the centre in all one-to-one and as it says is ‘alive and active’
so as to make clear between the soul [our human emotions, attitudes] and the Spirit [the
direction from God], as in Matthew 16:17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of
Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in
heaven.†This is the revelation that cements the outcome of one-to-one; finding God in
our lives and being pointed towards Him in everything.
