Knowing God
Spurgeon said “He who often thinks of God will have a larger mind than the person who simply plods around this narrow globe…Nothing will so magnify the soul as a devout, earnest, continued investigation of the Deity”. AW Tozer says “what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us”.
So let us draw near to God that he might draw near to us (James 4:8). Let us gaze upon him and then fall on our knees in worship. Let us seek to better understand, know and obey this awesome God.
A Definition of GodThere is but one only living and true God, who is infinite in being and perfection, a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions; immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous will, for His own glory; most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him; and withal, most just, and terrible in His judgments; hating all sin, and who will by no means clear the guilty. (Westminster Confession of Faith) Memory Verses“This is what the Lord says, Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth, for in these I delight says the Lord”. Jeremiah 9:23-24 “And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” John 17:3 “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26

Freedom and FencesEvening Study series from 6th September
In these chapters Paul exhorts us how we can be free in Christ to enjoy some of God’s greatest gifts. But we learn that with freedom there has to be boundaries if we are to enjoy the gifts in the best possible way. This series of ten talks will explore marriage, how we can best enjoy our freedom without harming others and how we can correctly worship God. Join us as we explore these big issues that Christians have wrestled with. But we cannot ignore them for they are pressing issues as we try to live lives that are distinctive in a godless culture. We begin our series with four talks based upon 1 Corinthians ch.7 on various issues relating to marriage: 1. The gift of marriage - Sept. 6th (GMcF)

dunamis (power)
As we approach Pentecost it is good to remind ourselves as Chistians where the real power comes from - the power that leads us to God, the power that builds churches, the power that heals, the power that even raises the dead. On Sunday evenings from April 26th we will be looking in detail at the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Each evening we will be looking at an aspect of the Spirit such as his working in Old Testament times, what does it mean to be baptised by the Spirit and how he works in the inividual christian's life as well as his role in the church. Join us as we look deeper into these things and discover where the real power behind christianity lies.

Fullness in ChristThe sufficiency of Jesus Christ for us today. We will be exploring the marvellous little letter from Paul to the church at Colossae. It is not one of the better known letters – Philippians and Ephesians would probably get more attention, and yet it is a powerful letter and it contains the best summary of the supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus in the whole of the New Testament.Paul wrote to stress that Christ is all-supreme and all-sufficient, all the riches and resources that we need are found in him to live life here in a God honouring way. A theme verse for the letter could be ch.2:10a which says “you have been given fullness in Christ”. That word fullness is the word I have chosen to sum up this series from Colossians. This letter gives witness to the finality, the fullness, the adequacy, the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ for our lives. What I mean is that faith in Jesus needs to be the bedrock of our living, the foundation of decision making, the ultimate purpose of our lives and the test by which we count the significance of what we do. The Colossian church was bombarded by teaching that said that Jesus was not enough to live a satisfied, God pleasing and significant life. Our world today can give us the same messages though perhaps in a more subtle way. Join us as we explore this powerful letter and allow it to speak into our lives today with God’s fullness.

On Sunday evenings we will be exploring our modern culture and encouraging us to "know the times" and engage biblically with the issues modern people struggle with. In an age of internet and ipod, credit crunch and idolising of sport stars and celebrities how can we think biblically. This series will look at some of these issues and will provide the opportunity for questions and comments from the congregation with a roving microphone. We will also be interviewing people in our congregation occasionally in the evenings to see how God is working in their lives and how he is using people in unusual ministries. We begin on Sunday 18th January by looking at what shapes the thinking of our post-modern generation and how we can respond: From Marx to Madonna: How did we get here?

Studies in 1 Peter - Living the Cross Centred Life
From September Norman will be leading our thoughts on Sunday mornings through this powerful letter of 1 Peter. The letter covers all matters of Christian life and practice and some have suggested that it was a manual for membership in the early church. It is a letter full of important beliefs to be lived out in real life, sometimes in the context of real suffering. Faith, patience and obedience are recurring themes. But at the centre of Peter

In this short series over four Sunday mornings beginning June 13th we will be looking at the life of one of the greatest men who has ever lived. John prepared the way for Jesus and there is much that we can learn from his life which will help us in how we relate to Jesus and how we lead others to Jesus.
After Easter we will be embarking on another church-wide project – 40 Days of Community – when the emphasis will be on answering the question ‘What on earth are we here for?’ Not just ‘we’ as different individuals, but we as High Kirk church family placed on the corner of Thomas Street. God’s plan has always been that we will fulfil his purposes in community with other people, so the goal of 40 Days of Community is to deepen the community of love within our church family and to reach out in love to the community

As a church we are commissioned by Jesus to go into the world and make disciples. How shall we do this? The best way is to follow the Master’s example. Jesus thought strategically, he had to, for he was only with his disciples for three years.
In this sermon series on selected passages from 1 and 2 Kings we will see how God used Elijah, and later Elisha, to demonstrate his power and holiness to an unfaithful people. Elijah bursts on the scene in 1 Kings 17 to proclaim God’s word and demonstrate his power. He is obedient, although perhaps his greatest flaw is that he works alone and only has an assistant when he reaches exhaustion. Elisha was appointed, by God, to be Elijah's disciple and successor and in many ways Elisha is shown to be a wiser man than Elijah. The story has lessons for the modern day disciple – showing us God’s power, holiness and his care; we also see the value of ‘passing the baton’ of faith and service to others younger than us.
Who is this God that we worship and can we really get to know him? In these sermons we will be exploring the character and nature of the God described in the Bible, not the God that men and women usually have in their minds. We will allow the Bible to shape our thinking and our worship. Our culture, and too often our church, is more man centred than God centred so we need the Bible to lead us higher - to lift our eyes and our hearts to properly worship God.
The second half of this letter of Paul to the Corinthian church contains some of Paul’s most interesting and controversial writings to a church that was eager to learn how to live in a holy way within a culture that was godless. Our culture in many ways is not unlike first century Corinth.
I will pour out my Spirit..." Acts 2:17
A five part series looking at the High Kirk Purpose Statement.
